Skyler returned to the kitchen and to Mike, who had finished his first sandwich and was building a second.

“I thought you liked Trace,” she said quietly.

“I do. But don’t you think he’s a little young for you?”

“I don’t think I need to think about it. I just met him.”

“I just don’t want you to get hurt by some…” Skyler shot him a shut up look, and he lowered his voice. “I know we’re not doin’ too well financially, and I don’t want some guy to come along and add insult to injury.”

“I don’t know what to say. I don’t even see a connection,” she said absently, her mind switching to meal planning. But she stopped, backtracked. “Didn’t you just break up with a woman who was a few years older than you?”

“She broke up with me.”

She offered a token nod. “If I’d felt a need to make a case, I could rest it right there.”

“Whatever that means.”

“I was giving you the benefit of the doubt, but it really doesn’t matter. We don’t have to protect each other. We’re grown-ups.”

“You’re not the type to have a fling, Skyler, but you’re easy pickin’s right now,” he said quietly.

“Eas—”

“I don’t mean—”

“Keep your voice down.” She lowered hers to his level. “We’re not having this conversation. It isn’t happening. You’re going to ride fence, and I’m going to try to figure out how we can keep Grady on through the summer. And my guest is off-limits to you until you cut the crap.” She nodded toward the sandwich on its way to his mouth. “So I hope your refrigerator has something in it besides beer.”

“I’m just sayin’.”

Have it. The last word is yours.

But her pointed glance at the back door was the last say.

And Trace—who hadn’t heard everything, but he’d heard enough—bottled up the last laugh.
